AI-Assisted Exam Grading
Bring fixed-template paper assessments into a traceable workflow for recognition, scoring, teacher review and results.
Designed for
Maths teaching teams, arithmetic programmes and assessment providers
Keep teachers focused on answers that need judgement.
Plan a traceable workflow for fixed-template paper assessments: recognise answers, apply scoring rules, review exceptions and publish results. Start with multiple-choice and arithmetic questions, then validate selected word problems.
A connected workflow
Keep teacher approval between paper capture and grade release.

01 / Solution design
Choose the scoring method by question type
Reading an answer is only one part of grading it. Format and scoring rules determine what can be automated.
- Multiple choice
Read defined answer regions and apply agreed single- or multiple-selection rules. Ambiguous marks and alignment errors require review.
- Arithmetic answers
Recognise numbers, signs, decimals and fractions, then compare using question-specific equivalence rules. Preserve meaningful units and precision.
- Selected word problems
Propose scores against rubric items such as setup, calculation and conclusion. Teachers confirm these questions in the first release.
- Outside the initial scope
Open essays, complex proofs, diagram reasoning and unrestricted page layouts require separate assessment. Abacus imagery and physical actions are not covered.
02 / Solution design
Keep the original answer behind every score
Academic leads set standards, teachers review exceptions and administrators track progress.
- Exams and templates
Manage question regions, marks, answer keys and student identifiers. Lock template versions and resolve ambiguous student matches.
- Capture and recognition
Import PDFs or images in batches, checking orientation, duplicates, missing pages and template alignment. Retain source images and answer coordinates.
- Review workspace
Show the source image, recognised text, expected answer, proposed score and amendment history together. Record recognition corrections separately from score changes.
- Results and publication
Aggregate confirmed marks and export results. Distinguish absence, missing work, incomplete grading and zero marks. Regrading creates a new version.
03 / Solution design
Route uncertainty to a clear review queue
Combine image quality, rule checks and answer ambiguity rather than relying on a model’s confidence claim.
- Ambiguous recognition
Route poor scans, conflicting candidates and template errors to review. Conflicting scores require teacher judgement rather than automatic averaging.
- Missing identity or pages
Keep the submission incomplete and block publication until resolved. A failed model call must never become a zero mark.
- Answer-key changes
Show affected submissions and retain rule versions. Require confirmation before regrading and republishing.
- Controlled automation
Calibrate release conditions on labelled samples. Audit rule-based items during the pilot; retain teacher confirmation for word problems.
04 / Solution design
Separate recognition, scoring and publication
Asynchronous processing and versioned records make failures recoverable and changes accountable.
- Linked records
Connect exam, student, submission, question and processing versions to images, recognised answers, rules and teacher edits.
- Processing and providers
Use separate recognition and scoring adapters. Select services using sample results, latency, cost and deployment constraints; deduplicate retries.
- Access and retention
Scope access by institution, class and task. Protect images, log exports and agree retention across originals, crops, caches and backups.
- Data boundaries
Confirm whether third-party processing is permitted and where it occurs. Treat paper content as answer data, never as instructions to change grading rules or access other records.
05 / Solution design
Validate real papers before scaling the build
Use handwriting and marking rules from the intended workflow to decide the first release.
- 01 Establish the baseline
Collect anonymised papers, answer keys and teacher marks, including erasures, poor scans and missing pages. Report supported types and failure modes.
- 02 Build the core loop
Deliver capture, recognition, review, totals and export for fixed-template objective questions. Provide manual recovery for failures.
- 03 Pilot selected word problems
Add rubric-based suggestions and controlled publication. Measure review effort before expanding coverage.
- 04 Launch and hand over
Configure classes, access, monitoring, backups and usage limits. Agree source deliverables, deployment guidance, configuration and training.
06 / Solution design
Measure accuracy alongside automation coverage
Use a held-out test set, stratified by question type and image quality. Resolve disputed reference scores before testing.
- Recognition accuracy
Report correct answers divided by evaluable answers, with normalisation rules and unreadable items disclosed.
- Scoring agreement and coverage
Measure agreement with teacher marks and the share processed without review. Report both so manual routing cannot conceal limited automation.
- Review effort and recovery
Measure review time per hundred papers and failure reasons. Exercise missing pages, retries, outages and regrading.
- Results, access and cost
Verify totals and class isolation. Measure peak completion time, failures, usage and cost. Student mismatches, unauthorised access and duplicate scores block release.
07 / Solution design
Keep grading separate from learning recommendations
Agree quality thresholds, cost and schedule after sample validation and scope definition.
- No worked explanations in the first release
Retain answers, marks and review evidence. Personalised tutoring, worked solutions and question recommendations are separate workstreams.
- Volume-based cost model
Separate build costs from recognition calls, scoring usage, retries, storage and compute. Include teacher review effort in the operating model.
- Validate each extension
New templates, open layouts, additional question types, local models and school-system integrations need their own assessment.
Does this replace teachers?
It supports them. Clear rule-based items may be automated after validation; ambiguous writing and disputed scores require review. Authorised staff approve final results.
Is a particular AI provider required?
No. Provider selection depends on sample results, cost, hosting and data conditions. Simulated recognition in a demo is not evidence of production model accuracy.
What is needed for an initial assessment?
Bring anonymised papers, blank templates, answer keys, rubrics, teacher-marked examples, roster formats, peak volumes and data-handling requirements.
